Flip a coin, watch your hope

The coin doesn’t make the decision. Your reaction to it does.

Newrate it below

Why it works

Long deliberation often isn’t about missing information. You usually already have a preference, but it’s buried under pros-and-cons lists and fear of choosing wrong.

A coin toss forces a moment of pretend commitment. For a second, the decision is made, and your gut reacts to that outcome before your analytical mind can step in.

That reaction is the data you were missing. The coin itself is just a way to surface it.

How to use it

  1. Give each option a side

Heads is one choice, tails is the other. Say it out loud so it feels real.

  2. Flip and notice

While the coin is in the air, or right when it lands, notice the flash of relief or disappointment.

  3. Follow the feeling, not the coin

If you felt relief, go with the result. If you caught yourself wanting a best of three, you already know your answer.

Where it comes from
The idea comes from “A Psychological Tip”, a short poem by Danish scientist and poet Piet Hein. The moment the penny is in the air, you suddenly know what you’re hoping.
